Y4 Geography trip to Whitby!

On Tuesday 4th July, the children in year four visited the beautiful seaside town of Whitby, as part of their Geography work about land use in the town. The children began with a walk up the 199 steps to St Mary’s church where they explored the churchyard and looked at the dates recorded on gravestones.

Following this, they spent time sketching Whitby Abbey and the surrounding grounds. The children discussed the land use around the area and the importance of the sea and shipping.

In the afternoon, the adventure began with a trip onboard HMS Bark Endeavour. The replica voyage took the children out to sea, along the shoreline to view the coastline. The children were able to view both the Whitby crocodile on the cliff tops and the Whitby Whale, out at sea. On the return journey, the children sang sea shanties as they rocked over the waves.

Before their journey home, the children visited the Whitby whale bones and Captain Cook’s monument. They discussed the importance of tourism and why things like this are important to attract people to the seaside town of Whitby.

Everybody had both an exciting but tiring day!
